Getting Started on VATSIM

An Introduction into the Great Hobby of Online Flight Simulation and Simulated Air Traffic Control

The Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network, known as VATSIM.net or "VATSIM" was created in 2001 by a group of individuals who came together with a goal of creating an organization which truly served the needs of the flight simulation and online air traffic control community. With an eye towards more than just providing a network of computers for users to log into, VATSIM is an online community where people can learn and, at the same time, enjoy the pastimes of flight simulation and air traffic control simulation all while making new friends from all over the world.

Introduction

Below you will find the necessary steps in order to become a Virtual Air Traffic Control Specialist within the VATSIM Minneapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC).

Depending on your current status, whether you are a new controller, reinstatement or transfering, the actual time to complete your application may vary.

Role of the VATSIM Controller

As in the real world, the role of the VATSIM Air Traffic Controller is to:

  • Maintain an orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic, and;
  • Prevent collisions between aircraft in the air, and;
  • Assist in preventing collisions between aircraft on the ground, and;
  • Provide additional assistance to pilots.

As an air traffic controller you provide a service to others so you are expected to be competent and display a standard appropriate for your ATC rating or position. Training will be provided by Minneapolis ARTCC, and you will be encouraged to participate and progress through the ratings as far as you wish.
